9th Anniversary Gift
Pottery marks the 9th anniversary on the traditional list, and leather goods the modern one. The word porcelain comes from porcellana, the Italian name for small white cowrie shells: early Italian travelers thought Chinese porcelain was made from ground shells, the USC Pacific Asia Museum says.

Why pottery for the ninth anniversary?
Pottery covers three main kinds of fired clay. Earthenware is fired at the lowest heat, between 1,202°F and 1,832°F, and stays porous unless it is glazed or burnished. Stoneware is fired between 2,102°F and 2,372°F, which makes it harder and usually waterproof. Porcelain is fired above 2,372°F, until its surface melts smooth as glass. It was first made in China in the 6th and 7th centuries, the USC Pacific Asia Museum notes.
Clay types, food-safe glazes and leather dressings
- Match the clay to the use. Stoneware and porcelain hold liquids well. Unglazed earthenware is porous, so check that a vase or mug is glazed on the inside.
- Turn a piece over before using it for food. The FDA requires decorative ceramics that could pass for tableware to carry a "Not for Food Use" warning or a hole through the food surface.
- Caring for leather goods? The Canadian Conservation Institute no longer generally recommends dressings or saddle soap, which can stiffen and darken leather.

Is handmade pottery safe to eat from?
It can be, but ask the potter whether the glaze is made for food. The FDA says lead is a bigger risk in handmade pieces with a crude look, antique or worn pieces, and pottery from flea markets or street vendors. Bright orange, red and yellow glazes need extra care. Washing cannot remove lead.
