Why lace for the thirteenth anniversary?
Lace is an openwork fabric. A guide from Dress and Textile Specialists and the V&A puts it simply. In lace, the pattern is surrounded by air, held together by bars of net. Its two handmade forms, needle lace and bobbin lace, grew out of cutwork embroidery and the twisting of fringes in the 16th century. From the start it was a luxury. Its price depended on how complex the pattern was and on the weeks, months or even years it took to make.
Machine lace began in Nottingham, England. John Heathcoat's 1809 "Old Loughborough" bobbin net machine was the first purpose-built commercial lace machine, says Nottingham Castle, which holds his model. John Leavers invented his own machine in 1813, and its later form became the base of Nottingham's lace industry.
Needle and bobbin lace, lace storage and fur labels
- Know the two handmade types. Needle lace, such as Alençon, is built from a single thread with a needle. Bobbin lace, such as Chantilly, twists many threads wound on bobbins. Chantilly is usually black silk.
- Expect real handmade lace to cost a lot. UNESCO says Alençon needle lace takes about seven hours per square centimeter. A low-priced "Alençon" or "Chantilly" piece is most likely machine-made in that style.
- Store lace flat in an acid-free box, with acid-free tissue in any folds, away from daylight. Do not wash antique lace with ordinary detergent or bleach; ask a textile conservator first.
- For the modern gift of fur, read the label. Under US law, the FTC requires the animal's name, the country of origin for imports, and whether the fur is dyed.

13th Anniversary Gifts questions
What is the 13 year anniversary gift?
The traditional gift is lace; the modern list offers textiles and furs. Lace making went industrial on a grand scale: a full-size Leavers lace machine stands about three meters high and weighs over 10 tons, Nottingham Castle notes.
How can you tell handmade lace from machine-made lace?
Start with a magnifying glass of at least 8x and look at the thread. The DATS and V&A guide says nylon or polyester lace is machine-made and dates from after 1950. For cotton, linen or silk, study the net ground, the pattern and what the outline thread does.
Can you buy a fur gift in California?
Not a new one. Since January 1, 2023, California law bans selling or making new fur products in the state. Used fur is exempt, and so are cowhide, deerskin, sheepskin and goatskin with the hair on. Other states have different rules, so check where you live.
