3rd Anniversary Gift
Leather for the traditional list, crystal and glass for the modern one: those are the 3rd anniversary gifts. Hill's Manual (1888 edition) says anniversary invitations were customarily printed on a material to match, such as thin wood, leather or tin foil.

Why leather for the third anniversary?
Leather is animal skin made stable by tanning, a process that chemically binds its collagen fibers together. The National Park Service's museum handbook notes that the word technically applies only to fully tanned skins. Untanned skins, such as rawhide and parchment, are not leather. Tanned hide still reacts to heat. Newly processed hides begin to shrink at about 140 to 167°F, the handbook says, and heat dries and deforms leather over time.
Hill in 1888 and Cooke in 1899 both put leather at the 3rd. The Standard Home Reference Library of 1910 broke from them, Time reports, with candy for the 3rd and leather for the 4th.
Full grain, bonded leather and leather care
- "Full grain" is defined by Leather Industries of America as hide with nothing removed but the hair and outer skin layer. Its original grain surface has not been sanded or buffed.
- Bonded or reconstituted leather is ground leather fibers mixed with other materials. FTC guides say it should not be sold simply as leather and should state the percentages, such as 60% leather fibers.
- Keep leather away from radiators, heating vents and direct sun. The Park Service advises 40 to 60% relative humidity, warning that levels above 65% invite mold.

Leather is the traditional gift, and crystal and glass the modern one. Old leather can suffer from "red rot": vegetable-tanned leathers made since the mid-19th century often redden and crumble to powder as acid breaks down their fibers, according to the Park Service's conservation guidance.
Does faux or vegan leather count as a leather gift?
No, because it is not leather. Leather is tanned animal skin. FTC guides say a material made to look like leather must be labeled with a term such as imitation leather, simulated leather or vinyl. Check the tag or listing for one of those words before you buy.
