How the weekday is found

Every date gets a day number on the Gregorian calendar, counting leap years by the full rule: every 4 years, except century years that are not divisible by 400. Days of the week repeat every 7 days, so the remainder after dividing the day number by 7 gives the weekday.

The result does not depend on your time zone. A date is the same weekday everywhere.

The tool also shows the weekday of your coming birthdays. To count down to the next one, use Days Until My Birthday, and for your exact age see the Age Calculator. You can also find out how many days old you are.

Worked example

Born March 21, 1996. Counting days on the calendar from a date with a known weekday shows that March 21, 1996 was a Thursday. The rhyme says "Thursday's child has far to go." Your birthday in 2027 is a Sunday, and the next one on a Thursday is March 21, 2030.

The "Monday's child" rhyme

First recorded in A. E. Bray, Traditions of Devonshire (1836). A fortune telling rhyme for children, for fun only.

  • Monday's child is fair of face.
  • Tuesday's child is full of grace.
  • Wednesday's child is full of woe.
  • Thursday's child has far to go.
  • Friday's child is loving and giving.
  • Saturday's child works hard for a living.
  • The child that is born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

What Day Was I Born questions

What day of the week was I born?

Enter your date of birth above. The tool works out the weekday on the Gregorian calendar, the calendar used in the United States since 1752.

What does the "Monday's child" rhyme say about my day?

The traditional rhyme gives each weekday a line: Monday's child is fair of face, Tuesday's child is full of grace, Wednesday's child is full of woe, and so on. It is folklore and says nothing real about a person.

Which day of the week are most babies born on?

In US births from 1994 to 2014, Tuesday had the most births (16.4%) and Sunday the fewest (9.8%). Weekdays all have far more births than weekends in this data.

Is my birthday on the same weekday every year?

No. Your birthday moves one weekday later each year, or two when a February 29 falls in between. The tool lists the weekday of your next six birthdays and the next one that matches the day you were born.

What if I was born on February 29?

Your weekday of birth works the same way. For your coming birthdays, years without February 29 use February 28.
