Why bronze for the eighth anniversary?
Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin. Most bronzes are about 90 percent copper and 10 percent tin, according to the National Park Service. Fresh bronze is salmon-colored, but it is seldom seen that way. It usually wears a natural green patina or a brown one added by the maker. Bronze gave its name to the Bronze Age, when people first combined metals to make better tools. It also casts in fine detail. By about 500 B.C., lost-wax casting was the main way Greek artists made bronze statues, the Metropolitan Museum of Art notes.
Bronze or brass, and linen labels and care
- Ask what a "bronze" piece really contains. The National Park Service notes that commercial "bronze" often holds zinc instead of tin. That makes it brass, sold as bronze because bronze sounds grander.
- Read the fiber label on linens. FTC textile rules cover sheets, tablecloths, napkins and towels, and the label must list each main fiber by percentage. A set sold as "linens" may be cotton.
- Household linens need no care label, since the FTC's care rule covers clothing only. Ask the seller how to wash them. Nebraska Extension advises storing heirloom quilts out of plastic and off bare wood.

Should you polish a bronze sculpture?
Usually not. A patina is a thin, stable layer of corrosion, and on bronze it is often added on purpose in brown, gray or black. The National Park Service warns that many commercial polishes contain ammonia or harsh abrasives that can damage the surface. Dust it with a soft brush instead.
