30th Anniversary Gift
The 30th anniversary's traditional gift is pearl, and its modern gift is diamond. After the 25th, Hill's Manual (1888 edition) said, "the tokens of esteem become rapidly more valuable," and it gave pearls for the 30th.

Why pearl for the thirtieth anniversary?
A pearl grows inside a living mollusk, which coats an irritant with layer after layer of nacre. The FTC Jewelry Guides keep the plain word "pearl" for natural pearls, formed with no human help.
Cultured pearl labels and the main pearl types
- Read the label. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, a cultured pearl must be called "cultured," and fakes must say "imitation," "simulated" or "artificial." "Faux pearl" or "fashion pearl" alone is not enough.
- Freshwater cultured pearls, mostly from China, are the most produced type. GIA says they offer the widest range of sizes, shapes and colors, at lower prices.
- The three main saltwater types: Akoya (Japan, China) are the classic white or cream. Tahitian run gray to black. South Sea (Australia, Indonesia, Philippines) are large, white to golden.
- Be wary of "freshwater akoya" or "Chinese akoya." GIA calls these names misleading, because true Akoya grow in a saltwater oyster. A GIA pearl report can confirm the type.

30th Anniversary Gift questions
What is the 30 year anniversary gift?
Pearl by tradition, diamond by the modern list. Pearls have a long written record: GIA says a Chinese historian made the oldest known written mention of natural pearls, in 2206 BC.
Are cultured pearls real pearls?
Yes. GIA calls cultured pearls real pearls, formed with human help: a nucleus is placed in the mollusk, which coats it with nacre. Imitation pearls are a different material altogether, such as plastic, shell or a composite.
