The 7th anniversary pairs wool with copper on the traditional list and gives desk sets on the modern one. Copper has a Revolutionary-era pedigree: roofing for the dome of the Massachusetts State House (1795 to 1798) was ordered from Paul Revere's newly opened rolling mill, the National Park Service notes.

Why wool and copper for the seventh anniversary?
The 7th pairs a fiber with a metal. Under the federal Wool Products Labeling Act, "wool" means fiber from the fleece of sheep or lambs, or hair from Angora or Cashmere goats. It can also include camel, alpaca, llama and vicuna. Copper is soft and easy to work. It can be drawn into wire or hammered into sheets without breaking, the National Park Service notes. Bare copper slowly changes color in the air. The green patina that forms over time protects the metal underneath.
Wool labels, felting and lined copper
- Read the wool label. Federal rules allow "virgin" or "new" only for fiber never reclaimed from a made or used product. Wool remade from woven or felted goods must say "recycled wool."
- Wool shrinks when heat, water and rubbing make the tiny scales on each fiber lock together. This felting cannot be undone, says The Woolmark Company. Machine-washable wool is treated to prevent it.
- For copper cookware, choose a pan lined with tin or stainless steel. Clemson Extension notes that the FDA warns against unlined copper, because some foods can dissolve the metal.
- Expect a copper planter left outdoors to change. Bright copper fades to brown, then slowly turns green. In dry desert air it may stay brown, the Copper Development Association says.

What is the 7 year anniversary gift?
Wool and copper, or desk sets on the modern list. Only the wool half is old: Hill's Manual (1888 edition) says friends "assemble with the woolen" at seven years, Maud C. Cooke's 1899 guide calls it the woolen wedding, and neither list mentions copper.
Are copper mugs safe for Moscow mules?
Only if they are lined. A Moscow mule is acidic, and the FDA Food Code says copper should not touch food with a pH below 6. Iowa cited that rule in 2017 when it said unlined copper mugs could not be used for the drink. A mug lined with stainless steel avoids the problem.
