In numerology, the tradition of giving numbers special meanings, your life path number is a single number worked out from your date of birth. It can be any number from 1 to 9, or one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Numerology uses it to describe the kind of path a person is said to follow through life.
Numerology is a tradition, not a science. There is no evidence that a number shapes anyone's personality, so treat your life path number as a bit of fun and a conversation starter.
A simple example first: August 12, 1990. August is 8. The day 12 is 1 + 2 = 3. The year 1990 is 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1. Adding 8 + 3 + 1 gives 12, and 1 + 2 = 3.
There are two common methods. One adds every digit of the date at once; the other, used here, reduces the month, day and year first and then adds them. For most birth dates the two agree. They only differ when a master number turns up in one method and not the other.
We use the month, day and year method because it is the one used by the numerology sites we checked, including numerology.com, which works through October 22, 1980 the same way to get 5. If another calculator gives you a different number, check which method it uses.
Worked example
Born January 2, 1990. Reducing the parts first: 1 + 2 + 1 (from 1990) = 4. Adding every digit at once: 1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 22, a master number. Same date, two different answers.
Numerology gives 11, 22 and 33 a special place and calls them master numbers. They are never reduced: if a month, a day or the final total comes to one of them, it stays as it is.
November is the only month that gives 11 straight away. Days can give 11 (the 11th and the 29th) or 22 (the 22nd). The number 33 can only appear in the final total, because no single month, day or year reduces to it. Born November 29, 1990: 11 + 11 + 1 = 23, which reduces to 5. Here two master numbers appear along the way, but the final number is still a single digit.
Five birth dates worked through, including one for each master number. Each part is reduced first, then the three results are added and reduced again.
| Date of birth | Month | Day | Year | Life path |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 08/12/1990 | 8 | 3 | 1 | 3 |
| 03/21/1996 | 3 | 3 | 7 | 4 |
| 11/29/1996 | 11 | 11 | 7 | 11 |
| 08/09/1985 | 8 | 9 | 5 | 22 |
| 07/04/1993 | 7 | 4 | 22 | 33 |
Sunday, July 4, 1993 is a rare 33: July gives 7, the 4th gives 4 and 1993 adds up to 22, which is kept, so 7 + 4 + 22 = 33.

Your life path is one of several numbers numerology takes from a birth date. The Lucky Number Calculator works out three of them, including the life path reduced to one digit. To see how two birth dates match, try the Birthday Compatibility Calculator, which uses both people's life path numbers.
For other ways to read a birthday, find your zodiac sign, your Chinese zodiac animal or the weekday you were born.
Enter your date of birth above and the tool shows every step. The date format does not matter: the month, the day and the year are reduced separately, so MM/DD/YYYY and DD/MM/YYYY give the same number for the same birthday. The answer is 1 to 9, or a master number 11, 22 or 33.
Reduce the month, the day and the year to one digit each, keeping 11 and 22, then add them and reduce again, keeping 11, 22 and 33. For December 25, 2000: 12 gives 3, 25 gives 7 and 2000 gives 2, so 3 + 7 + 2 = 12, which reduces to 3.
In numerology, 11, 22 and 33 are master numbers, and they are never reduced. Numerology treats them as special but does not rank them above the other numbers, and like everything in numerology the idea is shared for fun.
No. It comes from your date of birth, which never changes, so your number stays the same for life.
Not quite. The life path is one of your lucky numbers, but lucky numbers are always reduced to one digit, so 11 becomes 2, 22 becomes 4 and 33 becomes 6.
Numerology links 7 with thought and mystery, and warns of withdrawing from society. You are a 7 when your month, day and year add up to a total that reduces to 7, such as 7, 16 or 25. January 1, 2003 is one: 1 + 1 + 5 (from 2003) = 7. Shared for fun, like all of numerology.
