Your sign, also called your sun sign, is the one the Sun appeared to be in on your birthday. Each of the 12 signs covers about a month, and we use the most common published date ranges for them.
The exact day the Sun moves into a new sign can change by one day from year to year. If your birthday is within two days of a change, the tool shows a cusp note so you know you may relate to the neighboring sign too.
Signs, elements and traits come from Western astrology, which is for entertainment. You can also find your animal with the Chinese Zodiac Calculator, your birthstone or your life path number.
Worked example
Born March 21. Aries runs from March 21 to April 19, so you are an Aries, a Fire sign whose symbol is the Ram. March 21 is the first day of Aries, so you are also on the cusp with Pisces.
Dates, symbol, element, modality and ruling planet for each sign, with the personality traits tradition links with it. Shared for fun.
The signs are sorted two ways. The four elements, Fire, Earth, Air and Water, each hold three signs. The three modalities describe how a sign acts: cardinal signs start each season, fixed signs hold it steady, and mutable signs carry it into the next.
| Element | Cardinal | Fixed | Mutable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries | Leo | Sagittarius |
| Earth | Capricorn | Taurus | Virgo |
| Air | Libra | Aquarius | Gemini |
| Water | Cancer | Scorpio | Pisces |
When people say their sign, they mean their sun sign, the one this tool finds. It depends only on your birthday, because the Sun moves through the 12 signs once a year.
Astrologers also talk about a moon sign and a rising sign, or ascendant. With the sun sign they make up the big three of a birth chart, also called a natal chart. The Moon moves through all 12 signs in about a month, so it changes sign every two to three days, and the rising sign changes about every two hours as the Earth turns. Working them out needs your exact birth time and place, which this tool does not ask for.
The signs are named after constellations, but they are not the same thing. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac: 12 equal slices of the year, with Aries starting at the March equinox. The real constellations behind the Sun are different sizes.
As NASA explained in 2016, the Sun actually passes through 13 constellations, including Ophiuchus. It also spends far longer in front of some than others: about 45 days for Virgo and only 7 for Scorpius. The Babylonians left Ophiuchus out to keep 12 signs for a 12-month calendar. NASA's point was simple: "we didn't change any zodiac signs," as Time reported. Your sign stays the same.
Enter your birthday above, or find your month and day in the chart. Every sign starts between the 19th and the 23rd of a month. So if you were born before the 19th, your sign is the one that began the month before: April 10 is Aries, not Taurus.
Each sign covers about a month, starting with Aries on March 21 and ending with Pisces on March 20. The day the Sun moves into a sign can shift by one day from year to year, so some sites list Aries until April 20 instead of April 19. BdayChecker uses the most common ranges.
Pisces. Pisces runs from February 19 to March 20, so a leap day birthday is always a Pisces.
It is the border between two signs, around the day the Sun moves from one into the next. Astrologers do not agree on how many days a cusp covers. Being born on one does not make you both signs, though: at any moment the Sun is in only one, so on the day a sign changes, your birth time settles which. On any other day, your birth date is all you need.
No. Your sun sign comes only from your date of birth. Sites that offer a sign by name follow a Hindu naming custom, in which a baby can be named after its rashi or nakshatra, so they read the Vedic sign back from the name. That is a naming tradition, not the sign you were born under.
Hindu, or Vedic, astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the stars, while Western astrology starts Aries at the March equinox. The two are now about 23 to 24 degrees apart, so each Vedic sign starts more than three weeks later. The Sun enters Vedic Aries at Mesha Sankranti, around April 14. Unless you were born in the last week or so of your Western sign, your Vedic sun sign is the one before it.
Sign compatibility, by tradition, says signs of the same element get along best, and pairs Fire with Air and Earth with Water. The tool lists your matches and your opposite sign. Like the rest of astrology, these pairings are a tradition shared for fun, not a prediction.
There is no scientific evidence that the stars shape personality or that a horoscope can predict events. The signs are a fun tradition, shared here for entertainment.
