How to find your lucky number by date of birth
Lucky numbers come from numerology and are shared for entertainment: they have no effect on real luck.
- Birthday number (also called the psychic number or Mulank): add the digits of the day you were born until one digit is left. The 21st gives 2 + 1 = 3.
- Life path number (also called the destiny number or Bhagyank): reduce the month, the day and the year to one digit each, add them and reduce again. March 21, 1996 gives 3 + 3 + 7 = 13, then 4.
- Attitude number: add the month and the day, then reduce. March 21 gives 3 + 21 = 24, then 6.
- Your lucky numbers are the three results, each listed once. For March 21, 1996 they are 3, 4 and 6.
Why every lucky number is a single digit
Lucky numbers run from 1 to 9. In numerology, 11, 22 and 33 are master numbers, and a life path tool keeps them. Here they are reduced to their single digit, so 11 becomes 2, 22 becomes 4 and 33 becomes 6. The tool says when this happens.
Your lucky days of the month are the dates whose digits reduce to one of your numbers. For the number 3 they are the 3rd, the 12th (1 + 2), the 21st (2 + 1) and the 30th (3 + 0).
For more from your birth date, find the weekday you were born, see how rare your birthday is, or work out the year of your golden birthday. The full working for the life path is on the Life Path Number Calculator.
Worked example
Born November 9, 2000. The month 11 is a master number, the day is 9 and the year 2000 reduces to 2. Adding 11 + 9 + 2 gives 22, a master number that the life path tool keeps. Here it reduces once more: 2 + 2 = 4. The day 9 gives 9, and the month plus the day, 11 + 9 = 20, gives 2. That makes the three numbers 2, 4 and 9.
Your personal year number
Numerology also gives each calendar year a number of its own for you. Reduce your birth month, your birth day and the current year to one digit each, add them, and reduce again. Born March 21, the year 2026 works out as 3 + 3 + 1 = 7. The number changes on January 1, and the tool shows yours for this year.

Lucky and unlucky numbers around the world
- 7 almost everywhere. Seven is the world's favorite number: it came first when the math writer Alex Bellos polled more than 30,000 people, as Plus Magazine reports. It is also the most likely total when you roll two dice, which happens in 6 of the 36 ways they can land.
- 8 in China. The word for eight sounds like the word for prosperity, so it stands for wealth. The Beijing Olympics were scheduled to open at 8:08:08 p.m. on 8/8/08, as NPR reported.
- 4 in China. Four sounds like the word for death, so many buildings skip the fourth floor.
- 9 in Japan. Nine is avoided because it sounds like the word for suffering.
- 13 in the US. Often linked to the idea that 12 is complete, which is why some buildings leave out the 13th floor and Friday the 13th has a bad name.
The notes on 4, 9 and 13 come from National Geographic. None of these traditions has any effect on real luck, but they explain why some numbers feel special. For where the fear of 13 comes from, and whether fewer babies are born on the 13th, read Is 13 a Lucky Number?
Ways to use your numbers
- Pick a date. Plan a party, a trip or a first day on one of your lucky days of the month (just for fun).
- Choose a team or locker number. A jersey or locker with your number is a fun way to carry it with you.
- Check an address. Type a house or apartment number into the checker to see if it reduces to one of yours.
- Compare with friends. Share your result link and see whose numbers match.
Never choose a PIN or password from your birth date or lucky numbers: they are easy for others to guess.
Lucky numbers in math
Mathematicians have their own lucky numbers, with nothing to do with numerology. Start with the odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and so on. The second number left is 3, so cross out every third number. The next survivor is 7, so cross out every seventh number that remains, and keep going. What survives are the lucky numbers, listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.
The lucky numbers up to 100 are 1, 3, 7, 9, 13, 15, 21, 25, 31, 33, 37, 43, 49, 51, 63, 67, 69, 73, 75, 79, 87, 93 and 99.
Lucky Number Calculator questions
How do I find my lucky number by date of birth?
Reduce three parts of your birth date to one digit each: the day (your birthday number), the whole date (your life path number) and the month plus the day (your attitude number). The three often overlap: when two match you have two lucky numbers, and when all three match, just one.
What is my Mulank or Bhagyank?
Your Mulank, or psychic number, is the day you were born reduced to one digit. Your Bhagyank, or destiny number, is your whole date of birth reduced to one digit. Adding every digit of the date at once gives the same Bhagyank as the month, day and year method, because the final single digit is the same whichever way the digits are grouped.
Can I check if my phone number is lucky?
You can check whether it matches your numbers. Type any phone, house or car number into the checker under your result. It adds the digits and reduces the total: 555-867-5309 adds up to 53, which reduces to 8. If 8 is one of your three numbers, the checker says so. It is all just for fun.
Do lucky numbers really bring luck?
No. They come from numerology, a tradition with no scientific basis. They are shared here for entertainment.
