How your generation is found

We match your birth year to a generation's range of birth years. Where Pew Research Center has defined a generation, from the Greatest Generation to Millennials, we use its range. For Generation Z we use 1997 to 2012, the range Pew uses in its reports. For Generation Alpha and Generation Beta we use the most commonly cited ranges and say so.

Each generation is split into thirds to show whether you were born early, in the middle or late. If you were born within a year of the edge of a range, you are what people call a cusper, and may share traits with the generation next door.

Your generation depends only on the year you were born. For your exact age, use the Age Calculator. You can also see how rare your birthday is or find what day you were born.

Worked example

Born in 1996. Pew Research Center defines Millennials as born from 1981 to 1996, so you are a Millennial. 1996 is the last year of the range, which makes you a late Millennial, and right on the cusp of Generation Z.

Generation Z. Pew Research Center starts Gen Z with people born in 1997, so 1997 is its first year. People born in 1996 are the last Millennials.

When does Gen Z end?

Pew Research Center uses 1997 to 2012 for Gen Z in its reports, so 2012 is the last Gen Z year here. Pew has said the end year is not final, so it could still change.

Generation Alpha, commonly dated 2013 to 2024, and then Generation Beta, commonly dated 2025 to 2039. Pew Research Center has not defined either range, so other sources may use slightly different years.

Why do generation years differ between sources?

Generations have no official definition. Researchers choose cutoffs based on shared events and trends, so ranges can differ by a year or two. BdayChecker uses Pew Research Center ranges wherever Pew has defined one.
